Bring together us for a two-day symposium exploring the power of the arts to engage students, strengthen comprehension, and bring content areas to life.
Hither's a look at what nosotros have planned for two-days of inspiring, innovative, and applied content, including timely topics such as reading comprehension, social-emotional learning, and empathy. Breakout sessions are presented by a talented lineup of Focus v teaching artists.

Let's Build! The Art of Paper Sculpture
with Kay Thomas
Bring out the inner sculptor in your students! During this hands-on workshop, y'all volition bend, fold, and roll paper into sculptural models that represent scientific discipline concepts, memorialize selected individuals, ideas or events from history and/or demonstrate understanding of characters or events from literature. Join Kay Thomas, sculptor artist from Texas, for a deep fine art experience guaranteed to reveal the builders in your classroom and give iii-dimensional thinkers a voice.
Creatively Moving Through SEL: Feelings and Awareness
with Jessica DiLorenzo
Our emotional states shift as we motion through events in our solar day. This session examines a step past pace process that connects the elements of motility to social emotional learning skills like self management, mind and torso awareness, and self expression. Participants are given the tools to introduce creative movement and mindful breathing techniques that assistance both students and teachers tune into and transform emotions.
Edifice Reading Comprehension Through Audio and Rhythm
with Imani Gonzalez
Explore new paths to help students develop reading comprehension strategies and make connections between music and linguistic communication. This session guides participants through a procedure to assistance students create a Soundscape – a way to retell the story that connects students to the story's tone, mood, setting, and the characters' culture(s). This learning process will help students create sensory images, employ questioning strategies, develop inference skills, and make up one's mind importance.
Your Body is a Drum! Self Expression Through Body Percussion
with Jason Nious

This body percussion session with performing artist Jason Nious will assistance you find your rhythmic voice. Learn torso percussion basics, time-keeping exercises, ensemble rhythm techniques, a blend of contemporary and traditional stepping choreography and tools to create your own steps!

Jessica DiLorenzo
Jessica DiLorenzo holds a master's caste in Elementary Education as well as a bachelor's degree in Psychology and Theater Arts from Rutgers University, New Jersey. Additionally, Jessica has been a creative mover her whole life, and she has received over 500 hours of mindfulness and yoga training. She has been joyfully integrating the arts and facilitating project based learning in unproblematic school classrooms since 2006, and she'due south led professional person development workshops for teachers and school leaders since 2013. In 2019, she received an honor for Leadership in Arts Education from The Arts and Cultural Alliance of Sarasota County. She is the Arts Integration and Social Emotional Learning Curriculum Specialist for Whatsoever Given Child Sarasota, and a national consultant, and a jitney and mentor to educators, instruction artists and leaders across the nation.
Imani Gonzalez
Imani Gonzalez is a professional person world/jazz vocalist, National Kennedy Center teaching creative person, and children's writer. Her voice is featured on many of the National Geographic Television's Explorer Series soundtracks, including the Emmy nominated Jane Goodall: "My Life with Chimpanzees."
Imani has taught in the DC public school arrangement and in private schools as a traditional world music teacher. She has had the honor of performing, touring, and recording with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Eye Orchestra for 8 years.
She is a 2016 through 2021 grant recipient of the DC Committee on the Arts & Humanities. Since 1989, Imani has held the stardom of being the offset and merely American woman who tours and records with the traditional Ghanaian ensemble ODADAA. She has written ii children'due south world books entitled, Dhimiki and Iyipo Yes with sing-a-long compact discs, which received rave reviews from teachers, students, universities and libraries.
Jason Nious
Jason Nious has traveled extensively with Cirque du Soleil, Step Afrika, Stomp, and the International Body Music Festival. He'south created award-winning choreography, worked as a cultural ambassador with the U.S. Embassy in Africa, Southward America, and Central America. Be ready to move with your students to learn body percussion basics, time-keeping exercises, ensemble rhythm techniques, a blend of traditional and contemporary stepping choreography, and tools they can apply to create their own steps to express themselves rhythmically.
Kay Thomas
Kay Thomas is a visual artist who received an M.F.A. in ceramics from Arizona State University and a B.F.A. degree in ceramics from Texas A&M University. She is joining you from Texarkana, Texas. A national teaching artist with over 30 years experience, Thomas has worked with grades Pre-K -university presenting integrated arts experiences that guide students in the creation of sculptures, drawings, and paintings that represent classroom objectives across the curriculum. In addition, she is a designer and presenter of a diversity of art workshops for teachers, most recently at the John F. Kennedy Heart. Currently, Thomas is a National Instruction Artist for the Texarkana Regional Arts and Humanities Council. She continues to create her humorous ceramic sculptures that celebrate and satirize, in a humorous way, America's fascination with pets, politicians, and celebrities.
